More Than a Conductor

Harriet Tubman is best known for her work on the Underground Railroad, where she bravely led countless enslaved people to freedom. However, her contributions to American history extend far beyond her role as a conductor. Born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland, in 1822, Tubman demonstrated bravery and defiance from a young age. At 13, she intervened when an overseer attempted to capture a runaway enslaved person, suffering a severe head injury that would cause lifelong seizures and headaches. In the fall of 1849, after learning she was to be sold, Tubman made a daring escape to freedom in Philadelphia. Over the next decade, she risked her life to guide approximately 70 people to freedom, including her family and friends, and provided instructions to 70 others seeking liberation.

Posthumous Recognition

Despite her remarkable service, Tubman faced a long battle for recognition and a military pension. In a testament to her enduring legacy, she was posthumously commissioned as a brigadier general by the Maryland National Guard in November 2024. This honor solidified her place as a true American hero and an inspiration to generations.   

Interestingly, the phrase “General Tubman” was first used by abolitionist John Brown in 1858, years before her official recognition. This highlights the respect and admiration she garnered for her leadership and courage.
